Hyatt Regency Mission Bay San Diego Guide: Spring for the Tower

san diego mission bay resort hyatt regency

The Hyatt Regency Mission Bay in San Diego is a genuinely lovely place to stay, with one giant asterisk: the fees will make your eyes water. The views are great, the food is better than it has any right to be, and the location puts SeaWorld, the San Diego Zoo, and the beach within easy reach. But not all rooms are created equal, and the resort fee has crept up steeply since we first stayed. This guide to the San Diego Mission Bay Hyatt Regency covers what to book, what to skip, and how to avoid paying full freight.

Quick Verdict: Is It Worth It?

Yes, but spring for the tower and book on points if you can. This is a beautiful, low-key waterfront resort that’s terrific with or without kids. The catch is the cost: a resort fee that has jumped to around $53 a night plus $50 self parking, all before you’ve paid for the room. Book a high floor in the main tower for the views, and use Hyatt points to dodge the resort fee entirely.

This San Diego Mission Bay Resort check-in time is 4:00 p.m.

5. Hyatt Mission Bay Parking Fee

How much is parking at Hyatt Regency Mission Bay? As of late 2025, self parking is about $50 per night. That’s a kick in the balls. No doubt about it. To add insult to injury, this San Diego Mission Bay Resort parking lot sometimes fills up, so the “cheap” option isn’t always available. Always confirm the current rate when you book, because it keeps climbing.

Pro tip: Valet runs about $55 per night, which is now roughly $5 more than self parking, not the same as it used to be. For that extra fiver you get in-and-out privileges and a guaranteed spot, so you never circle the lot with three cranky kids in the back. If the small premium is worth the convenience to you, go valet. Otherwise, self park and pocket the difference.

Bonus pro tip: If you find yourself at the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Resort San Diego in need of a car, the concierge can coordinate a rental.

6. Download the App

8. Hyatt Mission Bay Waterslides and Pools

Does San Diego Mission Bay Resort have a pool? Yes, and the area is blissfully uncrowded most of the time.

The hotel offers three heated pools, three waterslides, and a hot tub. Deck chairs are ample, and a quick service Hyatt Mission Bay restaurant with a bar is located poolside.

Pro tip: Day pool passes for non-guests have come and gone here over the years (sometimes through a resort-pass service, sometimes not offered at all). If you’re hoping to swim without booking a room, call ahead and confirm passes are actually being sold before you drive over.

Bonus pro tip: There are showers located outside the pool area.

Extra bonus pro tip: There is a free towel dispensing machine onsite. No need to bring them from your room.

Note: The waterslides are not open during all of the Hyatt Mission Bay pool hours. Check the schedule at the time of your visit.

9. You Can Rent a San Diego Mission Bay Resort Cabana

You can reserve a cabana at Hyatt Mission Bay San Diego pool. Just because you can doesn’t mean you should.

There are plenty of deck chairs. Your room will be steps away from the pool. A cabana is not essential to enjoying your day. Go for it if it makes you happy. Otherwise, save your money for something else.

10. Hyatt Mission Bay Dining Options

Market Mission Bay

The Hyatt Mission Bay Market is the grab-and-go spot for quick breakfast and lunch, with coffee, pastries, and snacks but no real seating. Hotel restaurants get rebranded and reshuffled fairly often, so treat the venue names below as a guide and check the current lineup when you arrive.

Pelican’s Hyatt Mission Bay

Pelican’s on the Bay is a Hyatt Mission Bay San Diego restaurant located next to the pool. It serves lunch and dinner. There is indoor seating, or you can order your meal to go. The food is reasonably priced and unexpectedly good. The cocktails are tasty, but stupid overpriced.

Hyatt Mission Bay Red Marlin

Red Marlin Hyatt Mission Bay is a table service restaurant on the water that serves breakfast and dinner. It specializes in seafood. The view is spectacular.

Pro tip: This San Diego Mission Bay Resort food is expensive. Bring the Black card for dinner. If you don’t want to drop a small fortune, try breakfast.

Bonus pro tip: Gluten free bread is available.

San Diego Mission Bay Resort Room Service

In-room dining is available, and it will cost you. Between the menu prices, the delivery fee, and the automatic gratuity, a couple of burgers can quietly turn into a car payment. Consider walking down to pick up your food yourself to save.

Off Property Dining

There are a ton of great restaurants near Hyatt Mission Bay San Diego. Corvette Diner is a fun option for kids with a lot of gluten free choices.

Pro tip: There is a sign on the boardwalk to the marina advertising tuna jerky. Do not miss this. It. Is. Bomb.

11. Firepits

At night, the Hyatt on Mission Bay lights firepits. They are a nice place to sit and have a cocktail.

Pro San Diego Mission Bay Resort visitor tip: The hotel advertises free smores. However, when I inquired at the front desk, I was directed to Pelican’s on the Bay to collect the supplies. Let’s just say the kit is not free, and I could have purchased supplies for an army for the same amount. Bring your own.

12. Hyatt Mission Bay Spa and Salon

The Wellness Lounge Day Spa offers standard spa services, including massages, scrubs, and wraps. Book your services online ahead of time.

You can also book salon services on property.

13. There is Free Wi-fi

This San Diego Mission Bay Resort and Marina offers free Wi-fi to its guests.

14. The Hyatt Mission Bay Fitness Center is Open All Night

The Hyatt StayFit Center is open 24 hours. It faces the water in the event that you choose to look away from your screen.

When we visited, the gym had Peloton bikes, because what else do people who work out talk about other than Peloton these days? RIP, Mr. Big. Equipment lineups change, so don’t book the trip solely for the bike of your dreams.

Pro tip: The resort has run group fitness classes periodically, including weekend yoga during our stay. Schedules change season to season, so check what’s on offer when you visit and grab a reservation if a class is running.

15. Ask for Toys

The concierge has beach toys, board games, bags, and other items to rent.

16. The Staff is Great

The staff at the Hyatt in Mission Bay is top notch. Everyone we encountered, from front desk to valet to restaurants, was all friendly and helpful.

Pro tip: You can text the staff questions.

17. Is Hyatt Mission Bay Dog Friendly?

Dogs are welcome, and they are everywhere. The current published policy is a flat $100 fee per stay (not per night), and the Hyatt at Mission Bay can provide dog beds and bowls. Fees change, so confirm the exact charge when you book.

Pro tip: The published rule is one dog, up to 50 pounds, per reservation (no cats). That said, I saw plenty of dogs that were clearly tipping the scale past 50 pounds, so enforcement seems loose. If your pup is borderline or you’re traveling with two, call ahead and confirm rather than rolling the dice at check-in.

Bonus pro tip: Ocean Beach allows dogs. It is located about five minutes from the San Diego Hyatt Regency Mission Bay Spa and Marina.

18. San Diego Mission Bay Resort Cancellation Policy

When you book directly with the hotel, the standard flexible rate typically lets you cancel up to a day or two before check-in without a penalty, but the exact window varies by rate and date. Check the cancellation terms shown at booking before you hit confirm, especially on the cheaper prepaid rates, which are often nonrefundable. If you book through a third-party site, confirm the policy there, because it won’t always match Hyatt’s.

19. There is a San Diego Mission Bay Resort Fee

Brace yourself: the resort fee has climbed to roughly $53 per room, per night (it was $35 when we first wrote this, so this is the line that’s aged the worst). For that money you get the fitness center, pool and hot tub access, the shuttle, in-room coffee and bottled water, the business center, and a trip back to 1995 phone calls. Verify the exact amount when you book, because it has only gone one direction.

Pro tip: You can avoid the resort fee entirely by booking a free-night award stay with Hyatt points. At roughly $53 a night, that perk is worth more now than it has ever been, and it’s the single biggest reason to lean on points here. More on exactly how to do that in the Ways to Save section below.

Note: When we stayed, the website hinted at a “kids 12 and under drink free” perk tied to the resort fee, but that was not our experience at all. We didn’t push to have the charges pulled off our bill, so if a perk like this is advertised when you book, get it in writing and be ready to be assertive at checkout.

20. There is a Free Movie in Your Hyatt Mission Bay and Marina Room

The hotel plays a movie each night on your television. This falls squarely into the “big who cares” category. You do have a TV, after all.

Use Miles and Points

Miles and points are the best way to travel for free. If you haven’t started collecting them yet, our beginner’s guide to points and miles is a good place to start, and these starter rewards cards are how most people get rolling.

Pro tip: If you stay on Hyatt points, you skip the resort fee entirely, which is a bigger deal than ever now that the fee is around $53 a night. Hyatt reclassified this property as a Category 4 hotel, and under the program’s newer five-level award chart, free nights run from 12,000 points at the lowest level up to 25,000 at the top. Translation: book your dates as early as you can and target the lower-demand nights to keep the cost down.

Chase Sapphire Cards

If you qualify for the bonus, this should be your first stop. The Sapphire cards earn Ultimate Rewards points that can be used in Chase’s travel portal or transferred to its travel partners, including Hyatt.

Transferring Ultimate Rewards points to Hyatt is one of the best redemption values available. Think several free nights.

Pro tip: Be sure to transfer your points to Hyatt and book directly with the hotel as opposed to booking through Chase’s travel portal. You will get a better value and avoid the Hyatt Mission Bay resort fee.

The signup bonuses change over time. Check the current offerings at the time of your application.

The Sapphire Preferred card has a $95 fee.

The Sapphire Reserve now carries a hefty $795 annual fee (up from $550 after the 2025 refresh). It still includes a $300 annual travel credit and lounge access via Priority Pass, along with a slate of other credits, so do the math on the perks you’ll actually use before you commit. If you’re already holding it and wondering whether to keep paying, our take on retention offers is worth a read.

Note: Chase has a 5/24 rule. If you have taken out or been listed as an authorized user on five or more cards in the last 24 months, you may be declined.

Pro tip: You can earn bonuses on the same card more than once. You qualify for a bonus every 48 months as long as you don’t have any Sapphire card open at the time you apply.

Chase Freedom Cards

Chase Freedom cards earn Ultimate Rewards points. However, you can only transfer these points to Hyatt if you also hold a Sapphire card.

World of Hyatt Credit Cards

The World of Hyatt credit cards from Chase earn Hyatt points only. There is both a personal and business version.

Both cards come with signup bonuses that make it worthwhile to take them out at some point, even if you don’t use them for everyday spend. Signup bonuses change frequently, so check availability at the time you apply.

The personal card has a $95 annual fee, but comes with a free night each year.

The business card has a $199 annual fee. There is no free night, but the earnings are slightly better and comes with a Hyatt statement credit. It also tends to offer better signup bonuses than the personal card.

Note: Chase has a 5/24 rule that may or may not apply to Hyatt cards. If you have taken out or been listed as an authorized user on five or more cards in the last 24 months, you may be declined.

Pro tip: Business credit cards do not count toward your 5/24 status because they don’t show up on your credit report, but if you are above 5/24, you can still be declined for the business card.

Bonus pro tip: You can earn bonuses on the same card more than once. You qualify for a bonus every 24 months as long as the same World of Hyatt card for which you are applying isn’t still open at the time you apply.

Extra bonus pro tip: You can take out both the business and personal versions of this card. You don’t need to pick one.

24. How Crowded and Relaxed Does It Feel?

One of the quiet selling points here is how uncrowded it feels for a resort this size. Because the rooms are spread across several buildings and the property is more about the marina and the water than a single packed lobby, you rarely fight for a deck chair or wait in a long line at the front desk.

If your idea of a vacation is a calm, spread-out place where the kids can roam the pool deck without you losing your mind, this fits the bill. It’s the opposite of a wall-to-wall mega-resort, which is exactly why we keep recommending it.

Hyatt Regency Mission Bay FAQ

Is the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay on the beach?

No. It’s right on the water with a marina and bay views, but it is not a sand-between-your-toes beach resort. The nearest beaches, including Mission Beach, Pacific Beach, and Ocean Beach, are a short drive away, and La Jolla is about 15 minutes out.

How much are the resort fee and parking?

As of late 2025, the resort fee is around $53 per room, per night, self parking is about $50, and valet is about $55. All of these have risen over time, so confirm the current numbers when you book. The cleanest way to dodge the resort fee is to book a free-night award stay with Hyatt points.

Which room should I book?

Spring for a high floor in the main tower (5th floor or above) for the ocean or marina view, and skip the low-floored Bay Buildings if you can. If you’ll spend real time in the room, the ocean-view corner suite is the upgrade we’d actually pay for.

How many Hyatt points do I need for a free night?

This is a World of Hyatt Category 4 property. Under the program’s newer five-level award chart, free nights range from 12,000 points on the lowest-demand dates up to 25,000 at the top. Award stays also waive the resort fee, which makes points especially valuable here.

Is the Hyatt Regency Mission Bay good for families?

Very. Three heated pools, three waterslides, a marina full of rentals, firepits, beach toys to borrow, and Pack ‘n Plays on request make it easy with kids. It’s also close to SeaWorld, Belmont Park, and the San Diego Zoo, so you’re never far from a day out.

Final Thoughts – Guide to San Diego Mission Bay Hyatt Regency Resort

The Hyatt Mission Bay San Diego Resort is expensive, and the fees have only gotten steeper, but it is still worth a stay. It has something to offer travelers with and without kids: the property is beautiful, the views are genuinely great, and the location is hard to beat. Just don’t pay full price. Spring for the tower, lean on Hyatt points to wipe out that roughly $53 resort fee, and you’ll come away feeling like you got a deal instead of a fleecing.
