Animal Kingdom Quick Verdict and Key Facts
The honest verdict: Animal Kingdom is absolutely worth a visit, and it’s the one Disney World park you can knock out in a single day. It’s also the one park where I’d tell you to keep your wallet in your pocket on the line-skip upcharge. A heads-up, though: the park is in the middle of a big remodel. DinoLand U.S.A. has been torn down to make way for a new “Tropical Americas” land expected around 2027, so there are fewer attractions right now than there were a couple of years ago. Plan accordingly.

1. Where is Animal Kingdom Disney?
Where’s Animal Kingdom? It’s one of Disney World’s four theme parks in the Orlando area, sitting at 2901 Osceola Parkway in Bay Lake, Florida. It’s the southernmost of the four parks, so factor in a little extra drive time if you’re staying up near Magic Kingdom.
2. Check a Crowd Calendar
What is the best day to go to Animal Kingdom at Disney World? You don’t need to guess. Check a crowd calendar so you visit on the least-packed day of your trip. As a rule, weekdays beat weekends, and any week when most kids are still in school beats a holiday week.
3. Do You Need a Park Reservation?
Good news, and a change from the early-2020s rules: theme park reservations are no longer required for standard date-based tickets at Disney World. You can just show up with your valid ticket. If you’re on certain annual passes or non-dated admission, a reservation may still apply, so it’s worth a quick check on the park reservations page before you go. For most families, though, the days of “no reservation means no park” are over.
4. Arrive Early
Check the Animal Kingdom hours before your trip. The park is best enjoyed first thing in the morning, before the masses roll out of bed. Arrive as early as you can for rope drop (the opening of the park). You’ll find shorter lines and better photo opportunities. 5. How Many Days Do You Need?
Can Disney World’s Animal Kingdom be done in one day? Yes. Unlike Magic Kingdom, you can easily knock Animal Kingdom out in a day. Plan to arrive early and stay through the afternoon. With a good touring plan, you should be able to do and see everything. With DinoLand gone during the Tropical Americas construction, there’s actually a little less to cover than there used to be.
Can Animal Kingdom be done in half a day? Not if you want to do everything. If you only want to ride the rides, you can probably make that happen.
6. Check the Weather
Orlando is hot as balls in general. For some reason, the sun seems to shine just a little brighter at Animal Kingdom. The humidity can be oppressive. You can also expect buckets of rain to get dumped on your head most summer afternoons.
There aren’t a ton of indoor things to do to escape the elements here, so this is a park where shade and air conditioning are worth planning around. Be sure to check the weather so you know exactly which layer of the sun it will feel like on the day of your visit.
7. What Do You Need to Bring?
You don’t want to lug a bunch of stuff around if you don’t have a stroller. It’s hot enough. Don’t make it worse. That said, don’t forget:

8. Parking and Transportation
Guests at Disney’s on-property resorts can take Animal Kingdom resort transportation to the park for free. All resorts reach the park via bus only. Buses start running about 45 minutes before park opening. One of the most important tips for going to Animal Kingdom is to be at the front of the line when the bus arrives. Get to the stop at least an hour before park opening.
If you have to drive, standard theme park parking at Disney World is $35 per day, with preferred parking running roughly $50 to $60 per day depending on the date. That one fee covers parking at all four parks for the whole day, so check current pricing when you book but budget around that.
Pro tip: If you park hop, you don’t have to pay for parking twice in the same day. The single fee carries across all four parks.
Bonus pro tip: There’s a dedicated Disney bus for people who are park hopping between the four parks.
9. Download the App
This is one of the best tips for Animal Kingdom. The My Disney Experience app is crucial. It gives you ride wait times, maps, the Tip Board, and lets you mobile order quick service meals so you skip the counter line.
Inside the app you’ll find Disney’s built-in planning tools, including the Tip Board, which suggests what to do next based on current wait times. It’s handy, but treat its recommendations as a starting point rather than gospel.
Pro tip: The app drains cell phone batteries faster than middle-aged women consume a case of White Claw on a Friday night. Bring a portable cell phone charger.

10. Is Lightning Lane Worth It at Animal Kingdom?
RIP free FastPass+ system. You had a good run.
Disney retired the old Genie+ name in July 2024 and replaced it with two paid line-skip products: Lightning Lane Multi Pass (the old Genie+) and Lightning Lane Single Pass (the old Individual Lightning Lane). There’s also a pricier all-in-one Lightning Lane Premier Pass tier that was added in early 2025. They’re all optional, but at the busier parks they can start to feel mandatory. At Animal Kingdom? Not so much.
Lightning Lane Multi Pass
Lightning Lane Multi Pass lets you book a head start on a set of attractions throughout the day. At Animal Kingdom you choose 3 to start, from a pool of about 8 experiences: Kilimanjaro Safaris, Na’vi River Journey, Kali River Rapids, Expedition Everest, Festival of the Lion King, Feathered Friends in Flight!, Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!, and Zootopia: Better Zoogether!. Unlike some parks, Animal Kingdom doesn’t use tiers, so you can book any three. Once you use one, you can add another.
Pricing is demand-based and varies by date. At Animal Kingdom, Multi Pass has generally run somewhere in the range of about $19 to $35 per person per day, often landing around $25. Check current pricing in the app, because it moves with the calendar.
Pro tip: Disney resort hotel guests can book Multi Pass up to 7 days before check-in at 7:00 a.m., for as many as the first 14 days of their stay. Off-site guests book 3 days in advance at 7:00 a.m. Set an alarm if you want a popular slot.
Bonus pro tip: Sometimes you have to scan your reservation more than once in the same line. Don’t book your next one until you’re sure you’ve cleared all the scanners.
Extra bonus pro tip: If you don’t care about sitting with your party, skip the upcharge and use the free single rider lines instead.
Note: You can be five minutes early or fifteen minutes late for your return window. That’s it.
Lightning Lane Single Pass
Single Pass is the à la carte option for the headliner. At Animal Kingdom, Avatar Flight of Passage is the only Single Pass attraction. (Expedition Everest moved over to the Multi Pass list, so it’s no longer a separate purchase.) You pay a flat, demand-based fee to skip the standby line once. The price floats with the day, so check it in the app before you commit.
Pro tip: On-property guests can start booking earlier in the morning than off-site guests, so if Flight of Passage is the whole reason you’re here, that head start matters.
Bonus pro tip: Don’t waste money skipping the line on Everest unless it makes you really happy. You can usually get on multiple times in the morning with little to no wait.
Are These Extras Worth it at Animal Kingdom?
Is paid Lightning Lane worth it at this park? It kills me to say it, because I genuinely love paying extra to avoid other people, but I don’t think so. Animal Kingdom without line-skips is totally doable, and with DinoLand gone there are even fewer rides to spread crowds across.
Single Pass (Flight of Passage)
The Flight of Passage line is long and builds fast in the morning. If you rope drop it or grab a Single Pass slot early, you’ll be fine either way. If you’d rather not gamble on the standby line and the price feels worth it to you, go for it. Just know it’s the one attraction where the upcharge is actually defensible.
Multi Pass
Multi Pass loses me at this park because you only get three picks to start, and several of the options are shows and a safari you can usually walk right into anyway. You can ride most of what’s here in the morning with reasonable waits. If you’re early and you have a plan, you’ll cover the park without it. Save the money for a churro.
11. Choose Your Disney Animal Kingdom Rides

Rides in the Africa Section
Africa is located in the back left part of the park. If you’re not chasing the big thrill rides, heading to the safari first makes sense.
Animal Kingdom Kilimanjaro Safaris
What should you not miss at Animal Kingdom? This ride is at the top of the list. Kilimanjaro Safaris is a long, open-air ride through a sprawling savanna. You’ll see a ton of animals, including crocodiles, giraffes, and cheetahs, with great close-up views while the driver narrates. It’s popular, so the lines get long.
Pro tip: The animals tend to be more active in the cooler morning hours.
Bonus pro tip: This ride doesn’t always run all the way to park close. Check the times so you don’t miss it.

Wildlife Express Train
The train takes you to Rafiki’s Planet Watch. It isn’t overly exciting, but walking isn’t an option.

Rides in the Asia Section
Asia is located in the right rear. This is a good place to head first if Expedition Everest is important to you.
Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain
Expedition Everest is the only Animal Kingdom roller coaster. The queue has a lot of interesting things to see while you wait.
It’s a bit like the Matterhorn at Disneyland, in that a yeti is mad at you. At one point the ride runs backwards, and there’s an indoor, dark section that feels like you go upside down, but you don’t. It’s a little rough on the neck.
Pro tip: Disney will let you pay extra to skip the line on this ride. Don’t. The standby wait is almost always reasonable, and if you head here first thing in the morning, you can probably walk on with little wait more than once.
Animal Kingdom yeti ride height requirement: 44″
Lightning Lane attraction: Yes (Multi Pass)
Animal Kingdom Kali River Rapids
Kali River Rapids is an Animal Kingdom water ride on a circular raft. You’ll find a similar ride at a lot of other parks. The wait is usually reasonable, and you will get very wet. Bring a poncho. What Happened to DinoLand U.S.A.?
If you remember DinoLand U.S.A. in the front right of the park, here’s the news: it’s gone. Disney closed and demolished the area to build a new “Tropical Americas” land, which is expected to open around 2027. The carnival games, TriceraTop Spin, and the play area all closed in 2025, and the DINOSAUR ride closed permanently in early 2026.
In its place, Disney has announced an Encanto-themed dark ride featuring the Madrigal casita and an Indiana Jones Adventure attraction that takes over the old DINOSAUR building. Until then, expect construction walls in that corner and plan your day around the rides that are still open.
Animal Kingdom Pandora Rides
Pandora is located in the front left. If Flight of Passage is important to you and the line isn’t long when you arrive, go here first.
Animal Kingdom Park Avatar Flight of Passage
The Animal Kingdom Avatar ride is a 3D motion simulator that puts you on the back of a banshee. You get strapped into a “link,” and the ride gives you the eerie impression you can feel the creature breathing beneath you. This is the most popular ride in the park, so the line builds quickly. It’s the one attraction here worth either a rope drop or a Single Pass.

Na’vi River Journey
Na’vi River Journey is a slow-moving boat ride through a bioluminescent rainforest. It ends with a remarkably lifelike Shaman of Songs figure. It’s a calm, air-conditioned ride, but it’s not worth a long wait. It tends to have a short line first thing in the morning, so if Flight of Passage is already long, this is a good option for rope drop.

12. Animal Kingdom Tips for Rider Switch
Do you have a small child ruining your fun? Good news.
Disney’s Rider Switch program lets the whole family wait in line only once. One adult rides while the other waits with the child who’s too small, then the adults swap without standing in the line a second time.
Pro tip: If you have a taller child who can ride, that child can ride with both adults. This crucial Animal Kingdom Disney tip lets your older kid ride twice.
13. What Animal Kingdom Animals Can You See?
Animals in Africa
The Africa section has the Gorilla Falls Exploration Trail. Here you can see a lot of big animals, including elephants, gorillas, monkeys, okapis, and hippopotamuses.
Asia Section Animals
Asia features the Maharajah Jungle Trek. You can see a number of crowd favorites, including tigers, gibbons, and komodo dragons.
Discovery Island Animals
The Discovery Island Trails, tucked around the base of the Tree of Life, feature otters, lemurs, tortoises, and a red kangaroo, among others.
Oasis Section Animals
The Oasis is the first section you’ll encounter upon entering the park. It features several animals, including spoonbills, anteaters, and wallabies.
Pro tip: Don’t waste your time in the Oasis first thing in the morning. Book it to a ride. Check out the Oasis on the way out, when the animals make a nice slow exit.
Rafiki’s Planet Watch Animals
Rafiki’s Planet Watch is an Animal Kingdom must-do for little kids. It requires a train to reach. It’s essentially a petting zoo with some gross insects in tanks. Just like at the county fair, the goats aren’t afraid of people.
14. Check the Animal Kingdom Park Schedule for Shows
This park leans hard on its daytime shows, and they’re a big part of what makes it more than a zoo. Some run continuously, while others have set times. There are no Animal Kingdom fireworks.
Note: You can use Lightning Lane Multi Pass for some of these, but you rarely need it. It’s unusual to be shut out of a show here.
The Animation Experience
If you’ve been dying to draw a Disney character, you’re in luck. You can take a class in the Conservation Station building that lets you do exactly that. I wouldn’t call it a great use of time unless you’re really into it.

Festival of the Lion King
This is the best show at the park and one of the best at Disney World, full stop. It’s a mini version of what you’d see on Broadway, with an elaborate set, singers, acrobats, and fire performers. The full production is running again after its pandemic-era trim, so you get the whole spectacle. If nothing else, you soak up the air conditioning. Don’t skip it.

Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!
The old Nemo musical got a reimagining and now plays indoors at the Theater in the Wild as Finding Nemo: The Big Blue… and Beyond!. It’s a shorter, retooled version with puppets and live performers, and being indoors and air-conditioned earns it points on a hot Florida afternoon.

Zootopia: Better Zoogether!
This is the park’s newest show, which opened in late 2025 in the Tree of Life Theater, taking over the space that long hosted It’s Tough to Be a Bug! It’s a stage show built around the Zootopia characters. If you’ve got kids who love the movie, it’s an easy win and a good way to escape the heat.

Feathered Friends in Flight!
Feathered Friends in Flight! is the park’s bird show in Asia. It’s kind of like if the birds from the Enchanted Tiki Room were let loose and given freedom to soar over the crowd. If birds aren’t your thing, this is an easy one to skip.

Winged Encounters
Winged Encounters puts a flock of macaws in the air at the same time in front of the Tree of Life. Because it happens out in the open on Discovery Island, it’s easy to stumble onto without committing to a full sit-down show. Check the daily schedule, since these outdoor animal moments don’t run all day.

15. Where Can Kids Burn Off Energy?
Heads-up for parents: The Boneyard play area was part of DinoLand U.S.A. and closed in 2025 with the rest of that section. So the big dirty sandbox dig-for-fossils playground that used to be the go-to energy-burner is no longer there. For now, the best bet for restless kids is the interactive Wilderness Explorers game, which gets them moving all over the park. A new family area is expected to come with the Tropical Americas expansion around 2027.
16. Play the Wilderness Explorer Game
Wilderness Explorers is a free game that lets kids earn stickers at various stations around the park. As an adult looking in from the outside, it looks like a lot of effort for not much payoff. But kids get super into it, and it’s a genuinely good way to get them engaged in learning about the animals while they walk off some energy.
Pro Animal Kingdom park tip: The main spot to pick up your books is on the bridge between the Oasis and Discovery Island sections, but you can grab one at any station. Don’t walk out of your way for the book at the start.

17. Where Do You Meet Characters at Animal Kingdom?
Traditional character meet-and-greets are back, so you can get the autographs and hugs again. On top of the regular greeting spots, keep an eye on the water: characters periodically roll through on boats in the Discovery River flotillas. It’s a low-effort way to catch a wave from Mickey and friends without standing in a meet-and-greet line.
18. Animal Kingdom Tips for Touring Plans
One of the most important tips and tricks for Disney Animal Kingdom is to have a plan. The park doesn’t have as many rides as the other Disney World parks, the queues get long, and you’ll want to minimize your waits.
What should you ride first at Animal Kingdom? The perfect plan depends on what your family wants to do. Generally, Avatar Flight of Passage will have the longest lines of the day. If there’s already a long wait when you get there, knock out a few short-wait rides and save it for later. You can usually walk onto Expedition Everest and Na’vi River Journey first thing in the morning.
Do not waste your morning seeing animals. They’ll be there all day.

19. Animal Kingdom Theme Park Restaurant Highlights
Animal Kingdom has way more dining options than rides, and honestly the food is a real strength of this park. If a restaurant takes reservations, make them as soon as your window opens.
Disney is great about accommodating dietary restrictions. Most Animal Kingdom restaurants have allergy menus, and at a minimum your server will work with you. Don’t be afraid to eat at the park.
Pro tip: Everyone can make Animal Kingdom dining reservations 60 days out, starting around 6:00 a.m. ET. If you stay in a Disney hotel, you can book your full length of stay (up to ten days) starting 60 days from your check-in date. Set an alarm. The popular ones go fast.
Bonus pro tip: When you make dining reservations, don’t book them in chronological order. Grab the hardest-to-get ones first, then circle back, even if it means reserving the restaurants you’ll visit at the end of your trip first.
Extra bonus pro tip: Consider eating at an off time. You’ll dodge crowds and take advantage of shorter ride lines while everyone else is at lunch.

Animal Kingdom Best Restaurants
Flame Tree Barbecue
Flame Tree Barbecue is an Animal Kingdom quick service restaurant. The food is decent and reasonably priced for Disney, gluten free buns are available, and the seating is outdoors but tucked under awnings with some of the best waterside tables in the park.
Pro tip: Use mobile order to skip the line.
Location: Discovery Island
Nomad Lounge
Nomad Lounge is an Animal Kingdom bar with small plates, snacks, and, wait for it, gluten free churros. If you’re gluten free, you’ve likely never seen a churro you can eat at a theme park. It’s mainly an adult hangout, but there’s a kids’ menu too. Disney knew what it was doing with this one.

Satu’li Canteen
Satu’li Canteen is arguably the most popular Animal Kingdom quick service spot for lunch and dinner. Its build-your-own bowls are fairly priced by Disney standards and genuinely good.

Tamu Tamu Refreshments
Tamu Tamu Refreshments is a snack stand with cocktails and some quick breakfast items. The real reason to stop is the alcoholic Dole Whip.
Location: Africa
Tiffins
Tiffins is the nicest restaurant at the park. The food may be excellent, but it is stupid expensive. This is a great pick for an adults-only meal, but skip it with kids. They won’t appreciate it.
Pro tip: If you pay with your Disney Visa credit card, you get a discount.
Location: Discovery Island
Tusker House
Tusker House is a character meal with Mickey, Goofy, Donald, and Daisy in their safari best. It’s expensive, but the food is good, the characters are fun, and it’s indoors in air conditioning. Worth a stop.
This can be a tough reservation to get, so book it as early as you can.
This restaurant used to be a buffet and switched to family-style service when it reopened after the pandemic closure. There’s less variety, but family-style is better: the server brings as much food as you want, and you don’t have to battle a bunch of kids with dirty hands to get it. As a bonus, kids get a postcard autographed by the characters on the way out.
Pro tip: Try a late breakfast after riding a few rides at park opening. It’s cheaper than lunch or dinner.

Yak & Yeti
The Animal Kingdom Yak & Yeti menu has a ton of Asian options, including a good gluten free noodle dish. The food is awesome and not bad once you account for the usual Disney upcharge. Air conditioning is plentiful. It’s delightful.
It’s one of the most popular table service restaurants at the park, so the reservation is hard to get. Plan to visit on the latest day possible of your trip and get online the moment your booking window opens. If you can’t grab it right away, keep checking back.
Pro tip: Yak & Yeti also has a quick service window. It’s outdoors and not as good, but it’s a solid fallback if you can’t get into the real restaurant.
